Rapunzel
Once upon a time, in a faraway land, there lived a poor couple who desperately wished for a child. After many years, the wife became pregnant. The couple lived next to a beautiful garden owned by a wicked witch. One day, the wife saw some fresh rapunzel (a type of plant) growing in the witch’s garden and craved it so much that she fell ill. Her husband, wanting to help, snuck into the witch’s garden to steal some for her.
When the witch caught him, she was furious. To punish him, she demanded that the couple give her their baby when it was born. Left with no choice, the man agreed.
When the baby girl was born, the witch took her away and named her Rapunzel after the plant her mother had craved. Rapunzel grew into a beautiful young woman, with long, golden hair. The witch locked her in a tall tower in the middle of the forest. The tower had no stairs or doors, only a single window high up. The only way to enter was for the witch to call out, "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!" Rapunzel would lower her long braid, and the witch would climb up.
